017 Reading: Canberra’s Urban Design

  • Planning procedures within Canberra have been influenced by... Griffins Planning concepts, garden city concepts, neighbourhood planning theory, land use/ transportation study techniques and city region planning concepts
  • The Y-Plan and the urban structure of the small towns reflect this – but is it really connected? There is only one form of transport and that is by bus
  • Griffin plan: strong reliance on axes and the strong respect for natural features. Although there was a lack of understanding of the underlying ideas and the philosophies of architecture which lead to the implementation of straight forward town planning and architecture
  • Inconsistent application of policies relate directly to the deficiencies found in Canberra

o Parliamentary zone is the most important example

o Canberra’s built environment and landscape has declined due to lack of maintenance and age

  • "urban projects which depend for their effectiveness on the groupings of public and commercial buildings to create public spaces, and on the quality of the architecture to create attractive and stimulating visual environments, have been less successful than might be expected, in the parliamentary zone this occurs because of an insufficient number of buildings; in the Wooden Town Centre because of too much contrivance and inadequate functional basis; in the Belconnen Town Centre because of incompleteness and unsympathetic building massing and texture”

o “To some extent time will alleviate and create further opporunnities to strengthen the third dimension of space”
