108 Design: Facade Experimentation

The technology behind the facade:

The facade system will require a pattern that works like the above image - it needs to be able to completely close (to help block out the western sun) and completely open to allow sunlight entry throughout the day.

The form of the design should be reflected in the facade. Below are some experiments of patterns - the final image is the chose system as it is a completely enclosed and seamless pattern which compliments the buildings form and its clean nature

Aspects to be considered in Micro Scale
  • Entry to Information and Waiting zone
  • Access to platforms to be at the South end of the building and must have light entry from above
  • Bathrooms to be accessible to all - Cycle Centre, staff and other users
  • Retail (food) to be easily accessible











103 Design: Experimental Forms

These forms were the basis that lead to the final design form - the idea behind these were to have a building that the users can walk on top of reminiscent of parliament house.

The first ones were going to connect via bridges but this was later decided to be changed to underground connections to reduce the visual impact of the site.



This is the decided form - the buildings roof is seen as one with a flexible nature (acts as a roof and circulation point - people will also be able to sit within the roof form)

101 Design: Experimental Idea

This idea was about using parts of the design to frame views of canberra when entering Civic or approaching Parliament house




100 Diagrams: Site access in Section and Plan

The next step was figuring out how the access points will work underground and how it will receive natural sunlight. Below the transit centres there will be a second layer which will be the main access points - with lifts and escalators - also secondary waiting points in which the users can look down and see the light rail and bus systems in use.



099 Diagrams: Site Planning

After discussing last week Natasha that the site was too spread out I have re-considered my site plan to try and keep everything together therefore reducing the circulation from one point to the other.



I first looked at putting the busway to the side using the entrance off vernon circle as the major entry - this complicated the paths in which the bus can turn to navigate the rest of Canberra. I then looked at the option of having everything in the piece of vacant land inbetween the two roads - this option again would be extremely difficult for access and unsafe for users as the roads either sides have 3 lanes. The final option was to have the buses underground aswell as the light rail - this option seemed to be the most logical aspect as it is less dangerous, less cluttered and allows for ease of access.


This diagram shows how the underground platform system will work within the site. Entry for the buses will be down lower in vernon circle. There will be 3 entry points - 1 either side of the road and one on vernon circle (this will help create a public space for the iconic capital hill) The buses will exit before the main cross road to allow for ease of turning and different bus routes. It should be noted that the existing bus system currently runs along this path also.

These diagrams show how the circulation within the site could work. The third diagram will be used as it allows for maximum use of the site reducing the need for angled platforms.

“…wise as the serpents, simple as the doves” (matthew 10:16)
The building is categorical on its implantation, an auxiliar plot nearby the albacete station railways. The proposal gets presence without stridencies, with discretion. The building has to solve a multiuse program, it also has to be a very symbolical landmark. This independent volume integration has allowed its distribution on the plot, in relation with its nearest surroundings; the highest block is situated in front of the railways, and now it’s been a referent from every point of view. the rest of the blocks, lower from the first, establish a relation with the rest of the technical buildings and help to reorder the area.
