120 Design: Response to Feedback


If the design were to have an above ground circulation route the main connection would be to the third building as there is no need for a connection between buildings 1 and 2. The building forms as discussed earlier in the planning side create barriers passed the sites - so these connections would be from above ground feeding off the roof circulation already created by the roof forms.

The use of a grass roof would create a more inviting place to be and will also help the building in terms of heating and cooling. Connecting these spaces would help in way finding aswell

118 Design: Site Plan
SITE PLAN WITH BUILDINGS IN CONTEXT
It was discussed in the crit today that the underground circulation is not good enough - the site plan which although I did not show justifies why all circulation would be from underground. This information was on my master plan although it did not convey well. It is proposed that the entry to the buildings is from the existing carparks - there is no reason for the users to cross the road to get to the other transit centre as it is completely redistricted by the building (as there are no obvious entries on the opposite sides) The users would also have no reason to cross to the otherside as generally they would get dropped off at which ever station they needed to go - that being the inbound or outbound, The user would then go underground to get to their required station. In the instance that the user is arriving at the site via the public transport they would exit the platform and go to the required building (having no need to cross above ground).
Primarily the users of the third building are the station users or the users from the residential section shown in the master plan as future development. The forms of buildings 1 and 2 do not suggest entry to the third building is achievable as the forms are angled in such a way to angle the users in. There will also be large levels of vegetated patches as shown in the diagrams above so although there is a visual connection there it is not one that suggests circulation above ground

117 Design: Facade

FACADE CLOSED
IT CAN BE SEEN HERE THAT ALTHOUGH WHEN THE FACADE IS CLOSED SEGMENTS OF LIGHT WILL STILL ENTER THE BUILDING ALLOW SOME NATURAL LIGHT IN WHILST REDUCING THE HEAT LEVELS WITHIN.

THIS SHOWS A SEGMENT OF THE FACADE WHEN IT IS OPEN - ALLOWING FILTERED LIGHT THROUGH - THE LITTLE FINS WILL STILL REDUCE SOME LIGHT LEVELS.


The above image shows the facade in detail and an exploded view. Double glazing not only helps moderate the temperature by preventing heat loss in winter and heat gain in summer but will prevent the facade from being damaged by natural elements and vandals. Double glazing will also help in noise reduction. Double glazing combined with the shading system will efficiently allow the building to achieve a comfortable temperature without the need for cooling/ heating devices. The chosen material for the shading system is a reflective foil - which will again help keep the temperature down.

In project 1 our proposal was to create TOD’s strategicallylocated throughout Canberra, these TOD’s were seen to include residential,commercial and public spaces to work with the existing infrastructure ofCanberra, they would be supplemented with transport centres to help in thereduction of private transport systems. A combination of light rail, bus andcycle were to be included – with light rail seen as the main connection to thegreater Canberra. A sustainable vision would be created by using effectivetransport systems along with higher density.
The chosen site is one of the points on Walter burleygriffins triangle design – currently the site is a car park and is not seen asa destination. When I first started to design my initial response was ratherspread out and there was a lack of connection to the proposed master plan. Fromthe start my intent was to be respectful of Walter Burley Griffin’s plans, thisis achieved by planning the site in such a way that all of the original viewsare intact and so capital hill can be maintained. Keeping this in mind Ithought that an underground system would be much more effective in keeping therail, bus and cycle systems together. Entrances for the buses will be placed onthe southern side of Capital hill, one inbound and one outbound. The chosenvertical path works with Canberra’s existing bus system as they are seen to rundown the main axis. To maximise platform space the buses do a loop to exit ontoNorthbourne Avenue – this helps reduce the circulation for the bus systems. Thelight rail will enter and exit before the site boundaries.
The site plan features three openings to the transit centre,this helps connect the surrounding districts. . The first building can be seen as the main transit centre,connecting to civic and the university it holds a cycle centre, offices, cafeand information desk, the second building is primarily an entrance that willhelp cater for the arts culture, the third placed on Capital Hill will activatethe space and create a public destination that will furthermore create aconnection to the master plan of residential and commercial buildings.
To enhancethe idea of views the users are able to walk on top of the building via thebuilt in ramps—tying in with the design of parliament house. The roofs will actas lookouts to the wider Canberra—building 1 features the cafe on the roof topromote the use of the roof. When looking back from Civic to Capital Hill the flagcan be seen behind the building—again a feature reminiscent of parliamenthouse. To not impose on the views allcirculation between the buildings is underground; natural light is filteredthrough the large skylights above.
Circulationwithin the buildings is minimised by grouping the public and private spaces. Thepublic spaces are centralised so that they are easily accessible from allpoints within the building. The shared platform for the bus and rail systemagain minimises circulation.
Ahomeostatic facade system placed on the north and west facades and theskylights will be used to respond to the external elements and control thelevels of natural light within the building. This will create an interestingexperience within the building as there will be a constant play on light andever changing spaces—the angles within will also change how the light wouldnaturally land.
