117 Design: Facade




FACADE CLOSED
IT CAN BE SEEN HERE THAT ALTHOUGH WHEN THE FACADE IS CLOSED SEGMENTS OF LIGHT WILL STILL ENTER THE BUILDING ALLOW SOME NATURAL LIGHT IN WHILST REDUCING THE HEAT LEVELS WITHIN.

THIS SHOWS A SEGMENT OF THE FACADE WHEN IT IS OPEN - ALLOWING FILTERED LIGHT THROUGH - THE LITTLE FINS WILL STILL REDUCE SOME LIGHT LEVELS.








The above image shows the facade in detail and an exploded view. Double glazing not only helps moderate the temperature by preventing heat loss in winter and heat gain in summer but will prevent the facade from being damaged by natural elements and vandals. Double glazing will also help in noise reduction. Double glazing combined with the shading system will efficiently allow the building to achieve a comfortable temperature without the need for cooling/ heating devices. The chosen material for the shading system is a reflective foil - which will again help keep the temperature down.

051 Exemplar: Marilena Skavara – Adaptive Facade


Here’s a great project that came out of the Adapative Architecture and Computationprogramme at the Bartlett School of Architecture. ‘Adaptive Fa[ca]de’ by Marilena Skavara explores the functional possibilities and performative characteristics of cellular automata (CA). In addition to the unique emergent behaviour of CA, a neural network enables a further computational layer to evolve CA behaviour to the context of its surrounding environment.

Building upon the early work of Conway’s ‘Game of life’ and Stephen Wolfram’s extensive research on the wider implementation of CA, ‘Adaptive Fa[ca]de’ becomes a living adapting skin, constantly training itself from the history of its own errors and achievements.
