· Lynch’s pioneering studies of the mental images people had of the cities in which they lived spawned a whole new field of research called cognitive mapping, focused on the metal processes involved in the formation of such images. The significance now attached to the concept of place identity as the interrelation of cognitive processes, social activity and formal attributes is one of the more important results of this research
